A fish hook The use of the hook in angling is descended, historically, from what would today be called a “gorge”. The word “gorge”, in this context, comes from an archaic word meaning “throat”. But like every August the larger fish seem to be light sensitive. Meaning that if you are looking to score with larger fish your best bet will be to fish either at night or at first light. Larger fish are being caught off of the beaches and around the islands and ledges. The top producing method has been fishing live eels. A slow retrieve near the bottom is where you will want to keep your offerings. Chunks fished on the bottom are always a good bet during August as well as the bass are more apt to take a free meal rather than hunt one down.
Mackerel, and Pogies along with Clams will take their fair share of large bass.

When I first started fishing with the Connecticut Surfcasters Association, the other guys I fished with were using plugs while I was using eels. Pretty soon, a lot of them turned to eel fishing due the results of those outings. Here is an overall look at striper fishing with eels from caring for your bait to fishing techniques. The cooler is compact and will easily accommodate a dozen medium sized eels. The plastic ice block keeps the eels cool without melting. This is important because if the eels become immersed in water, they will deplete the oxygen in the water and suffocate.
It is also a good idea to place a damp cloth in the cooler as the eels prefer a moist environment. I use a mesh bag with a drawstring at the opening.

Coming from a family with a long-standing Arizona fishing history, Ben spent his childhood years split between the desert lakes surrounding the Phoenix area and the high country lakes and streams in the White Mountains near Whiteriver. His diverse fishing education would eventually lead to an unbelievably successful fishing career, both as a guide and as a tournament angler.
It was while attending Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona on a full ride music scholarship that Ben realized that his passion for fishing could not be ignored. After college Ben set out and quickly rose through the ranks of professional bass fishing. In the tournament off-season, Ben started guiding for existing guide services that needed help throughout the state. Ben quickly became the most sought after bass guide in Arizona.
Ben has since compiled over 40 first place finishes and over top-twenty finishes in his bass fishing tournament career, including 4 angler of the year titles, and has qualified for every championship that he has fished for. Ben has also logged more client days over the last 10 years than any other guide in Arizona, and has used his time on the water and tournament skills to develop one of the most impressive client sheets of any guide in the world.
Ben has also traveled extensively with his high school sweetheart and now wife Kelly to various fishing destinations throughout the world in search of new techniques and tactics including trips to Costa Rica, Belize, the Yucatan, Aruba, Hawaii, Alaska, Curacao, St. Ben is the proud father of two boys and two labs. But the pros know that’s not quite true – there are many styles to choose from and gaining experience will help define which is best for your needs. Treble hooks are a great choice when using artificial lures, but also deliver solid performance with cut bait. If quick and easy baiting is a priority, straight hooks are ideal. Taking on a species known for putting up a powerful fight? Offset hooks sink in and hold tight to ensure your catch doesn’t lose the hook before bringing it in. Durable Fishing Hooks Strength matters, so be sure to consider construction.
Carbon steel delivers the toughness needed for exposure to water, salt and other challenges of marine environments, and tempered or forged construction gives a boost of sturdiness. Chemically sharpened points add extra hardness, while offset fishing hooks and nor-tempering promote reliable performance each time you cast.
Hook Sizes Hook size depends on a variety of factors, so be sure to assess your fishing situation before making a purchase. First and foremost, determine the species you’re after. A smaller species is well accommodated by a smaller hook. No matter what the goal is, prepare for fishing expeditions with items from our selection of terminal tackle.

But exactly what is a float rig and how do you create one? A float rig is a great way to fish using live shrimp or live mud minnows, because it allows easy casting and lets your bait suspend at the proper depth with every cast. A float rig begins with some basic parts: The benefit to fishing a float rig is being able to cast the float with a leader and still being able to fish in deep water.
Your bobber stop goes onto your line; it is moveable, which allows you to move it along your line to the depth you want to fish. Because it is so small, you can reel the bobber stop right up into the reel and still be able to cast it back out through the guides of your fishing rod. After you cast, the weight pulls the line down through the slip float until the bead comes to the bobber stop and stops the float at the desired depth. The most productive time to use a float rig is when you are fishing in water over 6 feet deep, such as the channels in creeks or deeper holes in a marsh system.
One of the most common areas to use a float rig is at our rock jetties. It works particularly well there because the jetties will have a range of water depths from 2 feet to 30 feet, and you can suspend your bait above the structure regardless of the depth. In shallow water you can go lighter, while in deeper water you need to go with a heavier weight to get the live shrimp or live mud minnow down to the right depth.
Fishing Bait & Tackle
A catch-all bait for inshore gamesters. Fiddler crabs are there for the taking around most mangrove shorelines and adjacent to mud flats at low tide. Fiddlers are a top pick for sheepshead, black drum and pompano.
Bait, Tackle, and Technology for the Carp Angler.
A brackish to saltwater species, they are called sheepshead because they have a month full of choppers that more closely resemble those possessed by the mammal than those of a fish. The habitat of the sheepshead is always in or around barnacle encrusted structures such as bridge piling, large rock formation like jetties, or submerged chunks of concrete rubble. So, when sheepshead fishing an angler must fish these types of structures.
Fortunately, sheepshead will eat fresh shrimp. Shrimp make a handy bait because they can be purchased at almost any coastal bait shop. Avoid using the frozen package shrimp that has begun to change colors and has the look of being stored for a long time. Dead shrimp will work as long as it is freshly dead. However, the best bait for sheepshead fishing is the fiddler crab. At lower tides, fiddler crab are generally quite abundant, running around looking for their next meal.
Most anglers catch them by hand or with some type of small mesh dip net and place them in a bucket. Fiddler crabs are easy to keep alive, they should be damp but do not submerge them in water. Protect the fiddlers for the heat and break off the large oversized claw when ready to use. A standard rod and reel loaded with 12 to 20 pound test line will do when sheepshead fishing.
