In the Brittonic , Devon is known as Welsh: Dewnens, each meaning “deep valleys. William Camden , in his edition of Britannia, described Devon as being one part of an older, wider country that once included Cornwall: THAT region which, according to the Geographers, is the first of all Britaine, and, growing straiter still and narrower, shooteth out farthest into the West, [ One erroneous theory is that the"shire” suffix is due to a mistake in the making of the original letters patent for the Duke of Devonshire , resident in Derbyshire.
However, there are references to"Defenascire” in Anglo-Saxon texts from before AD this would mean"Shire of the Devonians” , which translates to modern English as “Devonshire”.
Sand dunes are being re-established at a popular South Devon beach where they were covered over by a car park around 40 years ago. The network of sand dunes at South Milton Sands was decimated when the public car park was built in the late s and early s. The National Trust, which bought the land in , has removed a section of the car park as part of a managed retreat from the encroaching sea. Some 40 car parking spaces will be lost, but a local landowner has agreed to open a nearby field during the peak summer period.
The timber sea defences at South Milton Sands The trust has also removed the deteriorating timber sea defences between the car park and the beach. The move is in keeping with the trust’s Shifting Shores policy of allowing nature – the encroaching sea – to take its course. Sand dunes will be restored to the removed area of car park, and maram grass will be planted. Board walks are to be constructed along the dunes.
The work, which follows consultation with local groups, residents and businesses, was completed in April
